While you have probably heard that texting while driving is dangerous, you may not have considered that texting while walking can pose serious dangers to pedestrians and other bikers and motorists. Now, a New Jersey town has taken action, banning texting while walking and holding pedestrians accountable of the potential dangers of distracted walking on busy roads at intersections. The law aims to curb pedestrian accidents and injuries as well as prevent motor vehicle accidents.
Many people have watched the YouTube videos of "texting and walking" accidents. One involved a woman falling into a fountain. Another involved a man encountering a bear while looking down at his phone. While the majority of these incidents are benign, short of some embarrassment for the tripping and falling walker, pedestrian wanderings can also be a serious hazard when involving motor vehicles.

A married couple from New Jersey is seeking to hold two people responsible for a horrible motorcycle accident that took place in 2009. Because of the crash, the husband and wife, who were avid motorcyclists at the time, each lost a leg.
The case may interest readers in Bergen and Hudson counties, since the couple has filed a lawsuit against the at-fault driver and the person who sent the driver a distracting text message. According to the personal injury claim, the text sender knew her friend was driving when she sent him a message, and that makes the text sender partially responsible for the married couple's injuries.

A New Jersey police officer from Paramus died recently in a motorcycle accident on the New Jersey Turnpike. The crash happened in Jersey City, and fellow officers and members of the community are mourning the loss of the 44-year-old, who was known for his generosity, good humor and charity work.
The 10-year veteran of the Somerville Police Department was off duty and wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Despite his protective gear, he still suffered a serious head injury. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, and less than an hour after the motorcycle accident, he was pronounced dead.

We've often discussed the dangers of auto-pedestrian accidents in Bergen County and throughout New Jersey. Our state demonstrates some alarming numbers regarding fatalities and personal injuries related to pedestrian accidents. Many collisions between vehicles and pedestrians occur because walkers or runners fail to obey crosswalk signals or other traffic directives, but a great many pedestrian accidents are caused by drunk, distracted or otherwise negligent driving.
With these issues in mind, Bergen County residents may be interested in a recent hit-and-run accident in Rutherford that still has police looking for the at-fault driver.

On a normal day, life moves along as usual with no major snags. The garbage man comes, the postman delivers the mail, employees make it safely to and from work and kids travel safely to school. It's easy to forget how difficult life can be when things don't run smoothly.
A recent multi-vehicle car accident in Wayne is a sobering reminder that one wrong move while driving can create a great deal of damage and injury. The accident took place on Monday when a cardboard recycling truck was headed east. A Ford Focus attempted to make a quick left before the light turned red, and crossed the path of the truck. In an effort to avoid hitting the Ford Focus, the truck veered right but was unable to avoid hitting the car.

A 22-year-old Hasbrouck Heights man was arrested and charged with drunk driving, reckless driving and second-degree vehicular homicide after crashing his car last month, killing his passenger. His bail was set at $150,000, and he does not have the option to post just the 10 percent, meaning he could remain incarcerated until his court date.
The fatal car crash occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on March 29 along Route 208. The driver apparently failed to navigate a curve, and his vehicle jumped the curb and hit a tree. His 24-year-old passenger and Bergen County Community College student suffered serious injuries and was later pronounced dead at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood about 40 minutes later.

The 42-year-old championship bodybuilder who was the victim of a hit-and-run accident last month in North Bergen has passed away as a result of his injuries. According to police, the 42-year-old from Butler was crossing Tonnelle Avenue with a friend when a dark-colored car struck him. The vehicle was travelling between 38 and 46 miles per hour, and the 42-year-old was thrown 110 feet from the spot where the pedestrian accident occurred.
Closed-circuit cameras offer an image of the car involved in the collision, but the make and model, as well as the license plate, are obscured in the video. Needless to say, the driver of the vehicle remains at large. The North Bergen Police Department is still looking for information regarding the accident.

Parents in Bergen County will be interested in recent statistics showing that when teenagers ride in a car together, the odds of a fatal accident are exponentially increased. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the chance of a fatal car accident is two times more likely when a teenage passenger is present, and a fatal accident is five times more likely when two or more teen passengers are riding along.
The reason? Teen drivers who are carrying passengers are far more likely to be distracted than teens who are driving alone. That news may not be much of a surprise to many parents in New Jersey, but the dangers associated with distracted teen drivers are nonetheless serious.

Two news stories pointed out the dangers that await pedestrians, even when they are using crosswalks and sidewalks properly. It seems that certain roadways in New Jersey are less safe than others, and because that is the case, too many pedestrian accidents result in serious personal injuries or even death.
The first news story provides details of a report conducted by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. The report mentions that between 2008 and 2010, 435 pedestrians were killed on New Jersey roadways. The new report does not mention how many pedestrians were injured, although common sense would say the number is significantly higher than the numbers who were killed.
